Upcoming Regattas and New Regatta Announcements

Hear Ye, Hear Ye,  see the new listing below for May 25th from one of our most active fleets: Cedar Point.

Oh boy, its going to be a Grand Prix-packed June for all the folks vying to go to Mexico for free! Three of the seven D7 Grand Prix events will take place next month, so check the tire pressure in your trailer and get registered (Not necessarily in that order)

But wait, there's more! Racing returns to Lake Winnipesaukee

Wickford Regatta, June 7-8

There is still time to get the early bird entrance fee for this classic ILCA regatta and the first Grand Prix event of the season. I do not know why, but the Wickford Regatta is always exciting and full of twists. A few years ago, it blew so hard on the first day that all racing was a cancelled except for one fleet. You guessed it: lasers!  It was super zippy, so zippy that when the Finns came out to give it a try, they turned tail, took down their sails and sailed bare poles back to the beach. We stayed out for three survival races and earned bragging rights at the delicious WYC dinner. Last year saw sun, rain, plus 15knts, drifter conditions, and winds from all cardinal points.

While June weather is always mercurial and fun, other aspects of the Wickford Regatta never change: Skip and Barbara run a tight ship with big smiles, a beautiful beach launch with a world-class dolly assistance team, sailing in the West Passage, square lines, challenging courses, and, most importantly, great sailors who are tolerable company. Sign up here before May 11 and save some cash, cuz you know you are going.

Portland Regatta, June 21
Back by popular demand as part of the D7 Grand Prix, the Portland Yacht Club is excited to welcome back the ILCA crew for a day of spirited racing. Think: pine covered Maine islands in all directions, easy ramp launch, and a one-day fun-day event that earns Grand Prix points.

Winnipesaukee Spring Laser Regatta
Here is a note from our friends at Winnipesaukee YC:
The Winnipesaukee Yacht Club is excited to invite all sailors to the 2025 ICLA (Laser) Regatta. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, June 21st at 45 Dockham Shore Rd., Gilford, NH. We intend to present a memorable event for everyone and to bring the lake’s dinghy sailors together for a great day of sailing! Please mark your calendar and come sail and encourage all your friends and family to join along. This regatta is open to youth sailors as well. This regatta is open to those who are not from the Lake Winnipesaukee as well and want to enjoy the beautiful scenery we have at the lake.
We look forward to seeing you on the water!!

Here's a message from our friends at NBYC:
Calling all New England ILCA sailors! Come to a one-day regatta at the best sailing venue in North America, and help settle the perennial question, "Who is the single-handed champion of Buzzard's Bay?" The regatta honors the memory of a beloved NBYC sailor, John Bentley, who started the event 24 years ago. Sailors will be reward with good cheer, great race management, epic sailing conditions, and warm hospitality. Please help keep the tradition alive. Vie for the coveted Bob Saltmarsh perpetual trophy This is an open regatta and part of the D7 Grand Prix. Peter Milnes Recap
(From the Fleet 413 newsletter)

The 2025 Peter Milnes Regatta delivered an exhilarating and challenging conclusion to the Frostbite racing season. True to the forecast, the harbor served up a robust 20-30 kts from the SW. While 24 sailors registered, not all braved the extreme conditions and several did not finish all the races due to equipment failures and/or pure exhaustion.

A huge thank you to our Race Committee! John Krystyniak stepped up as PRO on a chaotic day, and Beckett Kumler proved invaluable, acting more as a support boat than mark-set due to the many equipment issues. Special thanks to Kelly Ferro for managing last-minute RC personnel changes and ensuring the well-deserved post-race pizza. The RC's efforts in setting the course and pushing the fleet through 7 races in such challenging conditions were truly commendable.

Michael Zonnenberg dominated the competition, achieving a picket fence victory by winning every race. Steve K made a strong showing to secure second place, and Evan Boyd took third, seemingly having the most fun out there. Adrian van der Wal finished fourth, with Christine Shope rounding out the top five.

With the Peter Milnes Regatta now complete, the Frostbite series has concluded. Congratulations to Adrian van der Wal, who held off the legendary Mark Bear to win the overall series!

Thanks again to everyone who dedicated their time and energy to ensure the season ran smoothly.

Cheers,

Z & Adrian

Under the Rope Regatta
(From Marblehead Fleet Captain, Tom Dailey)

Bill Lynn Tops Fleet of 31 to take the Under the Rope Regatta
  • Bill won 2 races and beat junior Max Dressel, who won race 4, by one point
  • That makes it sound easier than it was: each of the 4 skippers behind Bill all had a double-digit finish in the last race… I bet even Bill was surprised that an avg. finish of 5th would take the day.
  • Yes there was drama - except for the two Bills, the entire fleet went around the bottom mark rather than thru the gate in race one… that’s 29 score as DNF
  • And in Race 2, the top 3 boats failed to round the offset mark and withdrew.
  • Newcomer Peter Kane was 2 more points back - Peter’s 2 daughters stole the show at the pizza party, deftly handling the awards ceremony
  • Downtown Billy Hines took third place
  • Jean François Guillou was 4th
  • Another downtown boy and EYC coach Justin Ahearn took the 5th place towel
  • Rick Eno took 6th and our top Corinthian trophy
  • Traveller Brad Holt was our Top Gypsy
  • Kate Dailey topped Liza Clinton by 2 points as out Top Female skipper
