HYC Laser Fleet News       Oktoberfest Success 36 boats raced in the third annual Oktoberfest, hosted by the Hyannis Yacht Club.  The regatta's attendance is gaining momentum, and at the current rate of growth we should have 48 boats next year!  It is a one day event with very convenient rigging, launching, and race course, and big fun both on water and after racing.  The RC did great work with the courses and starts, and was able to get off 6 races in great conditions.  The water is still warm, and the wind started at 12-15 with gusts to 18 and slowly dropped to 10, so all competitors had conditions to their liking at some point during the day.  Steve Kirkpatrick and Peter Shope battled it out for the top spot almost every race, while the rest of us marveled at their hiking prowess.  Steve ending up 1rst overall with 6 points, followed by Peter [8], Brian Fisher [22], P J Schaffer [28] and Christine Neville [28].  Peter Seidenberg won the Radial division, dropping his only second for a perfect score of 5.  Full results are posted at the regattanetwork site http://www.regattanetwork.com/event/17594#_newsroom+results The event features a post race Oktoberfest meal, good socializing, and a free beer fill up for the trophy mug winners.  The event is made possible by great RC work orchestrated by PRO Richard St. Onge, and shoreside organizers Lisa MacLean and Brian and Trish Leaver, all ably assisted by 18 more volunteers.  Brian Leaver has a bow mounted go-pro, and has shared the following on water video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1Nq_p7VuPA&feature=share Plan on coming next year, we guarantee you a good time. Hyannis Yacht Club - Fleet News

Races This Coming Week: Thursday 6PM (5:00pm rig) Sunday 12Noon (11:00am rig)

Aug 1, 2018 Hi All, We hope you had a great July 4 week!  The sailing conditions last week were at the two extremes with a stiff 15-20kts breeze on Thursday and  light air on both Wednesday and Sunday.  The light air days have dominated the schedule this year and those staying focused on the details have been rewarded. This week we are back to the normal Thursday and Wednesday schedule, so come on down and enjoy the best days of the summer! One issue to report is that the fleet has been very late getting out to the starting line this year - averaging about 25-30min late!  The RC has asked that we please pull it together so we can get started on time.  Please arrive in time to rig and leave the beach 20min prior to the first gun.  You're devoted fleet captains will be making an effort to keep everyone on schedule and trying to get off the beach at the appointed time.  Thanks for your help. Lastly, if you are still planning on bringing your boat down, make sure to stop in at the stewards office so they can help you find a spot.  The rack is very full, but there are various other craft currently in the rack that can be moved.   Also, if you have experienced any lost items, damage to your boat, or anything that concerns you in the storage area, please respond to this email and let us know.  We are currently working with the board and leadership of the club to address the boat storage area and any other concerns fleet members might have about the storage area. The Return of the 50+ Boat MA State Laser Championship!

This year the Helly Hansen Marblehead NOOD is also the Laser MA State Champs, which drew 53 boats in 2016. The 2018 fleet already includes boats from Maine to Florida, multiple NOOD Champions, a hasben World Champion, and yachties from AUS & UK.

So far, 25 Lasers are registered, making us the 2nd largest NOOD fleet behind the J70, which has 46 boats - but those are big boaters who do dorky things like pack sandwiches and avoid late fees. Laser Sailors don't care about that. But we do care about max boats on the line - so as soon as you say:

Just a friendly reminder that this Sunday, June 24 is the ECSA Laser Regatta at Sachem's Head Yacht Club in Guilford, CT. The late fee for the registration kicks in on Thursday, so if there are others in your fleet that want to come, sign up before then to avoid the additional fee!

The $35 registration comes with racing, a regatta t-shirt, post-race food, and 2 drink tickets, so it's a fairly good deal if you decide to make the trek!

June 12, 2018 Hi All, Last week we had great weather, great attendance, and great racing!!!  Both Thursday and Sunday had fine sailing conditions with interesting breezes and sunshine.   The season is really getting going now and it's great to have everyone back out there! Thursday night was the debut of fleet coaching, with Dave Penfield piloting a RIB around the racecourse helping fleet sailors get tuned up.  Many positive comments were received about how helpful it was to sailors of all skill levels.  Dave also commented on how much he learned just watching others sail.  There's nothing like having another pair of eyes seeing what you're doing and providing feedback!  We plan to have coaching as often as we can and would like to encourage everyone to volunteer for a day.  It's a great way to learn yourself, while at the same time helping others.  Pretty awesome!!! If interested, please respond with a Sunday or Thursday date this summer that you'd like to help your sailing peers. Sailing conditions for this week are looking pretty awesome, so come on down!!! HYC Laser Fleet News       Races This Coming Week: Thursday 6pm (5:00pm rig) Sunday 10am (9:00am rig)

June 6, 2018 Hi All, Though a bit windy last Sunday, the sailing was great.  The RC, led by John, did a fantastic job firing off 5 races in a gusty NE breeze. Many thanks to them! A couple of housekeeping items: 1)  Rack space is in high demand this year- make sure to buy your stickers and get down there to put your boats/stickers on the rack. 2) Registrations are starting to roll in but there are still a significant number of folks not registered.  Please use the info in the box at the end of this newsletter to go register! This week is our first Thursday night and Sunday we'll be racing in the morning.  The weather looks super for Thursday.  If you are nervous about the water temp, it isn't bad, as Dave attested, after wiping out a bunch of times practicing gybes on Sunday.  Expect the water to be in the low 60's. Our first coaching session will be Thursday, so come take advantage of this great resource for fleet members.  Dave Penfield will be driving a RIB around, offering advice before, during and after each race, to anyone who wants to listen.  And he will rig his boat ahead of time if someone wants to sail it.  If you know of someone who might be motivated to join our fleet and needs a little encouragement, have them contact Dave at 508 776 5699 to reserve his boat.  All they will need to do is show up with some reasonable clothing [light wetsuit or layers] and have a good attitude.  His boat also can be used by someone who just hasn't gotten their boat out of mothballs yet, but the preference will be for a new recruit. We want to make coaching a regular occurrence, so please volunteer to coach on a day of your choosing.  Contact Dave to reserve your day.  The benefits to the fleet are obvious; and in addition, watching what happens on the course from a different perspective is a great way to learn more yourself.  [BTW it will also help your season score, as we intend to award a bonus 1rst place finish for the day to the coach].
